He said a single testosterone test, assuming it was accurate, could "at best, only tell you the concentration of testosterone in your blood at the time you took the test". Symptoms commonly attributed to low testosterone were often non-specific and overlapped with fatigue, stress, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties, Cheung said. Testosterone naturally declines with age but it is not inevitable for all men, and lower levels may also be linked to factors including type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and the use of certain medications. "This creates a sense of urgency for solutions, which in turn fuels lucrative markets for pharmaceuticals, supplements and medical devices, even in the absence of clear clinical benefit. This meant "men may come to perceive themselves as inherently deficient or in need of medical intervention", she said. They shape how men understand their bodies, ageing and identity, and often lead to negative self-perception and mental health," she said. "Within this narrative, so-called ‘alpha men’ are promoted as dominant, sexually successful and physically powerful, and our study found testosterone was positioned as the key to achieving this status," Gram said. The lead author of the study, Emma Grundtvig Gram, a public health researcher at the University of Copenhagen, said influencers promoting routine testosterone screening often framed normal variations in energy, mood, libido or ageing "as signs of pathology". Researchers analysed 46 high-impact posts about low testosterone and testing made by TikTok and Instagram accounts with a combined following of more than 6.8 million, to examine how masculinity and men’s health are being depicted and monetised online. "If you’re not waking up in the morning with a boner, there’s a large possibility that you have low testosterone levels," an influencer on TikTok with more than 100,000 followers warns his viewers. Researcher points to ‘medicalisation of masculinity’ after investigating how men’s health is being monetised online Selling masculinity – A qualitative analysis of gender representations in social media content about "low T" In addition, there are profound social influences on testosterone that are sometimes more clear than the more widely studied effects of hormones on behavior (7–9). However, healthy men often have lower levels with no symptoms and supplementing testosterone may do more harm than good. Hormone therapy is recommended for those with a condition called hypogonadism, where the body can’t make enough testosterone, resulting in symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, muscle loss and fatigue. For men, testosterone levels naturally decline by about 1% a year after age 30. Testosterone therapy is approved for the treatment of delayed male puberty and abnormally low production of testosterone secondary to malfunction of the testes, pituitary or hypothalamus. Women may have a testosterone deficiency due to diseases of the pituitary, hypothalamus or adrenal glands, in addition to removal of the ovaries. Although testosterone may make prostate cancer grow, it is not clear that testosterone treatment actually causes cancer. Research demonstrates in nonhuman animals that competition can experimentally increase testosterone, including most notably in males of various bird species (15) but also in others. Theory predicts that, for testosterone, one evolutionarily salient social context is competition (3). Our experiment opens up new questions of gender→testosterone pathways, highlighting the potential of examining nature/nurture interactions and effects of socialization on human biology. These results also supported theory that competition modulates testosterone over masculinity. We conducted an experiment to test how gender norms might modulate testosterone as mediated by two possible gender→testosterone pathways. Men taking testosterone replacement must be carefully monitored for prostate cancer. There are times when low testosterone is not such a bad thing. Affected women may experience low libido, reduced bone strength, poor concentration or depression. The researchers found the content was closely linked to the online manosphere, a cluster of online communities that promote narrow, hyper-masculine ideals and frame men’s health, identity and success through dominance, physical strength and sexual performance. Finally, 15 min after the performance, participants provided a second saliva sample and completed the PANAS and gender self-ratings again. Although salivary assays may underestimate the actual strength of testosterone–behavior links in women (45), our within-subjects design addresses this problem (6). However, because men are encouraged to engage in more competitions and to wield power more frequently, this might paradoxically lead to dampened testosterone responses in men to individual competitions, as has been shown in other species (15). Our study used a more social interactive engagement, with the opportunity for rich social communication consistently marking power rather than merely outcome. There may be other important functions of this hormone that have not yet been discovered. For example, the genitals may not enlarge, facial and body hair may be scant, and the voice may not deepen normally. Adolescent boys with too little testosterone may not experience normal masculinization. A "feedback loop" closely regulates the amount of hormone in the blood. The pituitary gland then relays signals to the testes to produce testosterone. Signals sent from the brain to the pituitary gland at the base of the brain control the production of testosterone in men. Checking testosterone levels is as easy as having a blood test. However, many men with normal testosterone levels have similar symptoms, so a direct connection between testosterone levels and symptoms is not always clear. That's why medications that lower testosterone levels (for example, leuprolide) are common treatments for men with prostate cancer. In fact, as men age, testosterone levels drop very gradually, about 1% to 2% each year — unlike the relatively rapid drop in estrogen that causes menopause. Women with high testosterone levels, due to either disease or drug use, may experience a decrease in breast size and deepening of the voice, in addition to many of the problems men may have.
